Supporting Neurodivergent College Students

This presentation focused on fostering inclusivity and understanding within A Nourishing Space, a program providing TWU students with wellness coaching . Key topics included:

  1. Inclusive Coaching Strategies: Practical approaches to create supportive, student-centered environments tailored to diverse needs.
  2. Understanding Neurodivergence: Clarification of misconceptions and guidance on adapting wellness goals to neurodivergent individuals.
  3. Gut Health and Neurodivergence: Insights on the gut-brain connection in neurodivergent communities and actionable tips for supporting overall wellness.
  4. Resources: A list of tools and organizations to enhance coaching effectiveness and inclusivity.

The goal was to equip coaches with the knowledge to promote wellness while embracing diversity.

In an interview with Telemundo, I addressed the topic of pedophilia, focusing on clarifying common misconceptions. Key points included:

  1. Defining Pedophilia: Differentiating pedophilia as a psychiatric condition from behaviors such as child sexual abuse, emphasizing that not all individuals with this condition act on their impulses.
  2. Raising Awareness: Highlighting the importance of distinguishing between having a disorder and committing harmful acts, to reduce stigma and encourage those at risk to seek help before causing harm.
  3. Support and Prevention: Discussing the role of mental health resources and early intervention in preventing abuse, and advocating for evidence-based approaches to support individuals and protect children.

The interview aimed to foster understanding and promote informed discussions on this sensitive topic.

In a panel interview on school shootings and their connection to mental health, I emphasized the following key points:

  1. Impact of Isolation and Peer Rejection: Highlighting the significant role of social isolation and rejection in contributing to feelings of alienation, which can escalate into harmful behaviors if unaddressed.
  2. Reducing Stigma: Addressing the misconception that mental illness is a primary cause of violence, emphasizing that most individuals with mental health challenges are nonviolent. Instead, discussions focused on systemic factors and the need for supportive interventions.
  3. Promoting Awareness and Support: Advocating for early identification of social and emotional struggles, fostering inclusive school environments, and increasing access to mental health resources as preventive measures.

The panel aimed to shift the narrative from blame to understanding, encouraging proactive solutions to prevent violence in schools.
